Georgia, Swat and Sri Lanka: war may be over, but the suffering goes on...

A year has passed after the conflict that plunged the world again in a climate of cold war, the conflict between Russia and Georgia for South Ossetia and Abkhazia, russian speaking regions within the territory of Georgia. Reciprocal blame for having started the conflict, 4-500 dead, tens of thousands of refugees and a situation which is now very likely to remain unstable for a long time.

The opposite case in Sri Lanka, where the government still forces 250,000 Tamils who fled the north to stay in refugee camps to control the population. Now the Sri Lankan government has announced local elections in the north but it is difficult to consider that a convincing sign of democracy in a country where humanitarian aid and journalists cannot enter the Tamil areas occupied by government forces.
