Orelsan, 27, a white, middle-class artiste from rural Normandy, became the centre of a cultural storm at the weekend after the last-minute cancellation of his appearance at Les Francofolies, a prestigious music festival at La Rochelle, on the Atlantic coast. The festival organisers dropped the rapper after a threat by Ségolène Royal, the Socialist leader of the region, to withdraw a public subsidy.
The singer’s offence, in Ms Royal’s eyes, was a two-year-old song called Sale Pute (Dirty Whore), which caused an outcry from feminist groups when the internet video began attracting attention in March.
