Mark Cavendish, Britain's Tour de France five-stage hero...

ONE of the world’s truly great sports events ends on the Champs Elysees in Paris today – the Tour de France – a race of superhuman effort that was once described as not so much sorting out the men from the boys as the heroes from the men.

Two of its supreme stars this year have been Mark Cavendish and Bradley Wiggins, an unprecedented glory for British riders that we should all cheer mightily.

It is an incredible achievement for what has so long been scorned as a minority sport, and when, even now, superstars like Cavendish and Wiggins remain wholly anonymous in London. 

Life is different abroad. Cavendish is feted everywhere across Europe – exactly in the way that Freddie Flintoff or David Beckham are here, and the adulation will only intensify now that he has won five stages of this year’s Tour, a phenomenal personal performance. Full story...
