High-speed internet comes to East Africa! Cool...

The jigsaw is finally complete. East Africa shed its tag as the only major inhabited coastline excluded from the global broadband map today when an undersea fibre-optic cable linking it to networks in Europe and India went live.

The commissioning of the 10,625-mile Seacom cable, which will soon be followed by two other submarine cables, is expected to drastically lower the cost of high-speed internet services and telephone calls. The region is currently dependent on expensive and often unreliable satellite links, which has prevented the spread of internet access. More...
