The local BJP leaders in Baindur near Udipi claimed that because Chaplin was a Christian, his statue would hurt the Hindu sentiments. Movie-maker Hemant Hegde was putting up the statue for the shooting of his film, Houseful.
But the BJP leader Suresh Batwadi and his supporters stopped the shoot. They alleged that the 67 feet statue was supposed to be installed on the land owned by a temple and it couldn't be tolerated.
Senior party leaders also share the same view. Home Minister VS Acharya has said that as the local residents were objecting to the installation of the statue, it couldn't be erected.
The police officials said that the Hindu populace wanted a statue of Vivekananda rather than Charlie Chaplin. Karnataka has been in the news for attacks on Christians and Churches apart from Saffron outfits taking on women visiting pubs.
