President Obama, saying "the terrorists who planned and supported the 9/11 attacks are in Pakistan and Afghanistan," announced a new strategy Friday to confront the growing threat in the two countries.
He announced plans for 4,000 more troops in Afghanistan, new legislation that would help the economies in Pakistan and Afghanistan, more training to bolster Afghan security forces and an increase in civilian expertise to help develop Afghanistan's economic, social and governmental institutions.
The president said that the "situation is increasingly perilous" in the region, and that 2008 was the deadliest year for U.S. forces in the fight against the Taliban and al Qaeda in Afghanistan. More...
