Child abuse unreported in rich countries?

The abuse of children in rich countries is far more common than official figures show, new research suggests.

Researchers think around one in ten suffer ill-treatment every year, yet statistics show fewer than one tenth of the cases are investigated and taken on by child protection services.

The authors of the report published in the Lancet added: "Scarce reporting to child-protection agencies is a cause for concern, and we need to find out whether maltreatment is being recognised and dealt with in other ways."
