The thieves had to move concrete barricades and bring in heavy equipment to haul off the $32,000 worth of salt from storage at Tovar Snow Professionals, which clears and salts properties during the winter, the Chicago Tribune reported Sunday, noting police have not ruled out an inside job.
Enough salt was stolen to last a suburban village through the winter and the crime occurred at a time of shortages and rising salt costs, said Richard Hanneman, president of the Salt Institute, an industry group based in Virginia.
"With the salt price being three to four times what it was last year, it's turning good honest business people into opportune criminals," Hanneman said.
