Mumbai: signs of an attempted coup in New Delhi?

Preliminary signs emerging from India’s power center, New Delhi, paint a picture of an unstable situation. Security is already compromised. But a bigger story is taking place in New Delhi, not Mumbai. There are disturbing signs that India, a nuclear-armed nation of a billion people, is witnessing a ‘soft coup’ attempt involving secular rightwing ideologues and Hindu nationalists.

Exploiting the fears of a traumatized nation and a government caught sleeping at the wheel, a core group of rightwing ideologues within India’s military, intelligence and political elite are trying to overthrow Manmohan Singh’s government. The plan apparently is to help the rise of rightwing elements in power and firmly push India in a confrontation with Pakistan and some other countries in the region.  More...

South Korean actress faces jail ... for adultery!!! Oh boy!

South Korean prosecutors have demanded an 18-month jail term for a popular actress who admitted breaking the country's strict laws on adultery.

Ok So-ri had sought to overturn the 50-year old legislation, which carries a maximum jail sentence of two years.

She said it was an infringement of human rights and amounted to revenge.

But in October the constitutional court ruled for the fourth time that adultery must remain a crime, saying it was damaging to social order. More...

India's 9/11: Who was behind the Mumbai attacks?

The Mumbai terror attacks were part of a carefully planned and coordinated operation involving several teams of experienced and trained gunmen.

The operation has the fingerprints of a paramilitary-intelligence operation. According to a Russian counter terrorist expert, the Mumbai terrorists "used the same tactics that Chechen field militants employed in the Northern Caucasus attacks where entire towns were terrorized, with homes and hospitals seized". (Russia Today, November 27, 2008).

The Mumbai attacks are described as " India's 9/11".

The attacks were carried out simultaneously in several locations, within minutes of each other. More...

Suite...

Swiss say okay to State-prescribed heroin...

Swiss voters have backed a change in health policy that would provide prescription heroin to addicts.

Final results from the national referendum showed 68% of voters supported the plan.

The scheme, where addicts inject the drug under medical supervision at a clinic, began in Zurich 14 years ago before spreading across the country.

But in another referendum, the Swiss appear to have rejected the decriminalisation of cannabis.More...

Mumbai and the age of "celebrity terrorism..."

Quite apart from the scores murdered and the hundreds injured, what the Mumbai terrorists really wanted was an exaggerated - and preferably extreme - reaction on the part of governments, the media and public opinion.

In these terms, the attackers received as much attention as they could possibly have hoped for, and the Mumbai outrage can only be described as a very significant terrorist success.

(...)

If so, then Mumbai could represent something rather different in the history of terrorism, and possibly something far more disturbing even than global jihad.

Perhaps we have come to the point where casually self-radicalised, sociopathic individuals can form a loose organisation, acquire sufficient weapons and equipment for a few thousand dollars, make a basic plan of action and indulge in a violent expression of their generalised disaffection and anomie.

(...)

Mumbai attacks: politicians tremble as anger mounts...

A day after the terrorist siege of Mumbai ended claiming over 180 lives, political heads started to roll Sunday with Home Minister Shivraj Patil resigning as the financial hub limped back to normal, dpa reported.

Patil's resignation, which was accepted by the President Pratibha Patil's office, came amid widespread anger over the government's weak stance against terrorism following the brazen attacks by militants.

As Finance Minister P Chidambaram was given additional charge of the home ministry, local news channels reported Manmohan Singh's government may call on top bureaucrats and other ministers to resign.

There was growing public anger that the ruling United Progressive Alliance was unable to stem terrorist attacks and bombings that have hit the country almost every month. More...

Nigerian 419 scams now hitting Paypal...

A VARIANT of the extremely popular Nigerian 419 scam is possible via Paypal, the INQ has discovered. On paper it looks bulletproof but it's still a big con.

The 419 scam is named after the relevant section of the Nigerian Criminal Code and the premise is always the same. Somebody offers to pay money into your account and give you a cut when you send it back.

In truth the whole thing is money laundering but this latest twist – using Paypal – is significant because, on the surface, it looks like there's no catch. More...

Suite...

Mumbai attacks: unanswered questions...

How many terrorists were there? Did they number 20 as Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh told a press conference on Thursday? Or did they number many more? If two or three terrorists attacked the CST, how many terrorists were present at the Taj and Trident?

Did the CST terrorists drop a grenade/explosive device at Dockyard Road on the way to the station? Or was someone else responsible for that act of terror which claimed three lives?

The terrorists are said to have set up control rooms at the Taj and Trident hotels, a Cabinet minister told PTI on Thursday. When were these bookings made? A detailed investigation into the bookings made at both hotels in the months, weeks and days before the attacks may reveal the names of suspicious guests who registered there. More...

Mumbai attacks: the cops who would not shoot back...

The Independent - has revealed how a newspaper photographer took an astonishing picture while hiding
inside a train carriage as gunfire erupted all around him.

Sebastian D'Souza, a picture editor at the Mumbai Mirror, whose offices are just opposite the city's Chhatrapati Shivaji station, heard the gunfire erupt and ran towards the terminus.

(...)

But what angered D'Souza were the masses of armed police hiding in the area who simply refused to shoot back.

"There were armed policemen hiding all around the station but none of them did anything," he said.

"At one point, I ran up to them and told them to use their weapons. I said, 'Shoot them, they're sitting ducks!' but they just didn't shoot back." Full story...

Sarkozy has to live with his voodoo doll!!!

Nicolas Sarkozy is undoubtedly the most trigger happy president in modern French history.

Not in terms of foreign policy - after all, this was the man who single-handedly defused the Russia-Georgia crisis by persuading Putin not to hang his Georgian counterpart's "by the balls."

No, Mr Sarkozy, a trained lawyer, saves his belligerence for the courtroom, with six lawsuits to his name since he was elected last year.

The Congo's OTHER war and, once again, children are its main victims...

A hidden war against Africa's children has broken out in the far north-east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, near the frontier with Sudan.

This conflict, which has forced tens of thousands to flee their homes in the last month alone, is entirely separate from Congo's insurgency around the eastern city of Goma.

Ever since its birth in Northern Uganda two decades ago, the LRA has filled its ranks by abducting children. These innocent victims – at least 20,000 of whom have fallen into the LRA's hands – are tortured, brainwashed and turned into soldiers or sexual playthings.

Today, the LRA and its psychotic leader, Joseph Kony, have been driven out of Uganda. But Kony has found refuge in Congo, where he runs a rebel headquarters located in Garamba National Park, a World Heritage Site where central Africa's last white rhinos were once protected.  Full story...

The Chinese and a foreign passport to a new life...

One of China's most famous actresses has been accused of being unpatriotic after becoming a Singaporean citizen.

Some say Gong Li, star of the film Memoirs of a Geisha, has turned her back on her Chinese fans.

But the actress is not the only Chinese citizen to seek another country's passport.

They do it for convenience, to improve job prospects and as a safety net.

Despite China's increasing economic and political power, a Chinese passport is still seen as restrictive by many of its citizens. More...

Prison inmates grow food for the poor!!! Wonderful!

Camp Pugsley, the minimum security state prison camp near Kingsley, generated over 18,000 pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables for local food banks during the 2008 growing season on just 1.3 acres. The program cost the state next to nothing, according to prison officials and is looking to expand next year.

Swiss vote on radical heroin rules...

Voters in Switzerland go to the polls on Sunday to decide whether to make a controversial heroin prescription programme a permanent, nationwide health policy.

The Swiss government supports the idea but opponents say it encourages drug addiction, and sends the wrong message to young people.

Throughout the 1980s and early 1990s Switzerland had one of the highest rates of heroin addiction in Europe.

Open drug scenes in cities such as Zurich, Basel and Bern were common, with addicts injecting and dealers selling publicly in the streets and parks. More...

A Swiss view of the Mumbai attacks...

The wave of violent attacks across Mumbai are not new to India and can be traced to the country's internal dynamics, Swiss experts say.

However the attackers are sending a different message this week by targeting foreigners for the first time, South Asia expert Gilbert Etienne told swissinfo.

Since Wednesday there have been ten coordinated attacks. Hotels have been under siege, Westerners taken hostage and killed and the central train station turned into a scene of carnage.

The attackers have not precisely spelled out the reasons and aims for the assault. More...

Eye for eye in Iran: man who blinded a woman with acid is to be blinded in his turn...

A court in Iran has ruled that a man who blinded a woman with acid after she spurned his marriage proposals will also be blinded with acid.

The ruling was reported in Iranian newspapers on Thursday.

The punishment is legal under the Islamic Sharia code of qias or equivalence, which allows retribution for violent crimes.

The court also ordered the attacker, 27-year-old Majid Movahedi, to pay compensation to the victim.

The acid attack took place in 2004. The victim, Ameneh Bahrami, went to Spain for surgery to reconstruct her face but efforts to restore her sight failed.

The ruling was a response to her plea to the court in the Iranian capital Tehran for retribution.

"Ever since I was subject to acid being thrown on my face, I have a constant feeling of being in danger," she told the court.

Ms Bahrami also said that Movahedi had also threatened to kill her.

"They are supposed to set-up a command centre in complete control as their first priority," the official said. "Instead they arrived and went in guns blazing. Full story...

Seven of the Mumbai gunmen came from Britain?

British-born Pakistanis were among the Mumbai terrorists, Indian government sources claimed today, as the death toll rose to at least 150.

As many as seven of the terrorists may have British connections and some could be from Leeds and Bradford where London's July 7 bombers lived, one source said.

Two Britons were among eight gunmen being held, according to Mumbai's chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh. At least nine others are reportedly dead.

The eight arrested were captured by commandos after they stormed two hotels and a Jewish centre to free hostages today.

One security official said: 'There is growing concern about British involvement in the attacks.' More + photos...

As many as 125 people, including 14police personnel, have been killed in the Mumbai terrorist attacks, the police told Xinhua on Friday morning.

China: man executed for ant-breeding hoax...

China has executed a businessman convicted of bilking thousands of investors out of $416 million in a bogus ant-breeding scheme, state media reported Thursday.

The official Xinhua News Agency said Wang Zhendong, who was found guilty of fraud and sentenced to death in February last year, was executed in north China's Liaoning province on Wednesday.

The death penalty is used broadly in China. Though usually reserved for violent crimes, it is also applied for nonviolent offenses that involve large sums of money or if they are seen to threaten social order. More...

Czech President Vaclav Klaus is a global warming skeptic...

Czech President Vaclav Klaus, one of the most prominent climate change doubters, is about to get a new platform: the European Union presidency.

Klaus has called man-made global warming a myth and questioned sanity of Al Gore, the former US vice president who received the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize for turning a spotlight on climate change.

Most recently, Klaus expressed hopes the EU would give up its ambitious plan to spearhead the global struggle against climate change in the face of the global financial crisis. More...

British teacher warns against celebrity culture...

Dr Mary Bousted, general secretary of the Association of Teachers and Lecturers union, claimed television stars and musicians are encouraged to behave badly because they know the public revels in their "distress and their downfall".

She claimed that by buying magazines featuring Jonathan Ross and Russell Brand, for example, readers allow the "clowns" to "act outrageously".

Dr Bousted denied that all teenagers just want to be famous, but admitted she had met a young girl whose only ambition was to become a WAG.

In a speech to the Oxford Union on Thursday night, Dr Bousted said: "At 12 she has, and is encouraged by her parents to have: hair extensions and false nails; to wear make-up; and when she is grown up, she wants to be Jordan. She was unable, despite the presenter's very kind interviewing style, to string a sentence together. What mattered, and what mattered only, was her appearance. More...

Malaysia backs down from yoga ban!!!

Malaysia's prime minister said Wednesday Muslims should still take up yoga, reversing an outright ban that has drawn widespread protests amid concerns over growing Islamic fundamentalism in the multiracial nation.

Malaysia's National Fatwa Council, comprising Islamic scholars, told Muslims at the weekend to avoid yoga because it uses Hindu prayers that could erode Muslims' faith.

But the decision drew a sharp rebuke from many Muslims and even Malaysia's sultans, or hereditary rulers, who said that they should be consulted on any matters involving Islam. More...

Biggs webcam suicide and the moral implications...

Abraham Biggs seemed to have found refuge from his battle with bipolar disorder and depression within an online community at fitness website bodybuilder.com.

The 19-year-old community college student from Florida posted thousands of messages to the site's "misc" forum — most were about girls, parties or other teen issues, but some dealt with his mental illness and forum’s role in his life.

"BB.com has become like a family to me (I know its kinda sad) but I find myself posting my life troubles and doubts on here, because I really don't want to talk to most ppl about stuff going on with me," he wrote in one post from August last year.

On November 19, Abraham took a fatal overdose of drugs in front of a webcam, while members of the same "family" watched on — some failing to intervene, others actively encouraging the teen to kill himself. More...

Italy: fascists offer money for babies to be named "Benito..."

What's in a name? A little extra cash, if the name is that of Italy's wartime Fascist dictator Benito Mussolini or his wife.

A far-right party is offering 1,500 euros ($1,900) to parents in southern Italian villages who name their children Benito or Rachele after the Mussolinis.

An official in the neo-Fascist Fiamma Tricolore party, Vincenzo Mancusi, says they are nice names. He says the initiative is a way to pay homage to his party's roots and keep alive names that are rarely used.

Mancusi said Tuesday the bonus applies to five villages in the Basilicata region where birth rates are especially low. Designed as an incentive, it applies to babies who are born in 2009. More...

Australia: restaurant bill dodgers Facebooked!!! Oh boy...

MELBOURNE restaurateur Peter Leary has used Facebook to track down bill dodgers in his up-market establishment, Seagrass.

The drama unfolded last week when a group of five young diners, after drinking at the bar, requested a table at the Southbank restaurant.

Over dinner, they worked their way expertly through the menu, ordered and drank fine wines and, after ordering dessert, slipped out "for a smoke". They kept going.

Leary was left with an unpaid bill for about $520, and little hope of recovering his money.

"It was then I remembered that when the group arrived, one of them had asked about one of our waitresses who was not working that night," Leary said yesterday. More...

Mumbai attacks: a new age of terror in India?

A coordinated series of terrorist attacks in Mumbai today signals a new age of extremism and sectarian violence that will likely increase over time. Since 2001 there have been 24 major terrorist strikes in India resulting in at least 966 deaths. The last five months have been the most harrowing with 302 dead from ten different attacks. As a hostage standoff continues in Collaba that number could rise even higher before the day is out.

What is most troubling about the recent assault on souther Mumbai is the sudden change in tactics. In the last several years most terrorist attacks have come in the form of coordinated small explosive charges, mostly left in nylon bags in commercial districts or IEDs made out of tiffin containers placed on the backs of bicycles in crowded shopping areas. What happened today doesn't fit the pattern of previous events. This wasn't a terrorist attack, this was a coordinated military assault on southern Mumbai excecuted with precision and calculated to inflict ecomonmic, civic, human and symbolic casualities. Mumbai attacks: Westerners being targeted?

Teams of heavily armed gunmen stormed luxury hotels, a popular restaurant and a crowded train station in coordinated attacks across India's financial capital Wednesday night, killing at least 78 people and taking Westerners hostage, police said. An explosion followed by a raging fire struck one of the hotels, the landmark Taj Mahal, early Thursday. Screams could be heard and enormous clouds of black smoke rose from the at the century-old edifice on Mumbai's waterfront. Firefighters were spraying water at the blaze.

The attackers specifically targeted Britons and Americans, witnesses said. Fires burned and gunfire was heard for hours. Officials said at least 200 people were wounded.

Gunmen who burst into the Taj "were targeting foreigners. They kept shouting: `Who has U.S. or U.K. passports?'" said Ashok Patel, a British citizen who fled from the hotel. Full story...

Obama: top bankers should forgo their bonuses this year. Why not next year too?

President-elect Barack Obama thinks bank executives should forgo their bonuses this year to show they are taking responsibility amid difficult economic times.

...

According to excerpts of the interview released by ABC, Obama said bank executives should make sacrifices because so many other people are struggling as the nation's economy slips further. Some financial firms, including Goldman Sachs, the Swiss bank UBS and the British bank Barclays, have said they aren't handing out annual bonuses to top executives, and Obama encouraged more to follow.

"I think that if you are already worth tens of millions of dollars, and you are having to lay off workers," Obama said, "the least you can do is say, 'I'm willing to make some sacrifice as well, because I recognize that there are people who are a lot less well off, who are going through some pretty tough times.'" 'British Fritzl' and his 27-year reign of terror shocks Britain...

A violent rapist with a "one-second fuse" who fathered 19 children with his two daughters during a reign of domestic terror lasting a quarter of a century was ordered yesterday to spend the rest of his life in jail by a judge who described the case as the most shocking he had ever heard.

An urgent review is under way into how it was that 10 of the children conceived by the women – who had been repeatedly beaten, abused and raped since the age of eight and 10 – were miscarried or terminated, yet their mothers' plight failed to come to the attention of welfare work.

Judge Alan Goldsack QC said: "As a result of this case, questions will inevitably be asked about what professionals, social and medical workers, have been doing for the last 20 years." More...

Jill Price and her awesome memory; blessing or curse?

"No one can imagine what it's really like," says Jill Price, 42, "not even the scientists who are studying me."

The Californian, who has an almost perfect memory, is trying to describe how it feels. She starts with a small demonstration of her ability. "When were you born?" she asks.

She hears the date and says: "Oh, that was a Wednesday. There was a cold snap in Los Angeles two days later, and my mother and I made soup."

Price can rattle off, without hesitation, what she saw and heard on almost any given date. She remembers many early childhood experiences and most of the days between the ages of 9 and 15. Zimbabwe witch-doctor cures British woman and changes her life forever...

SOME holidays are life-changing because of the breathtaking beauty and drama of the landscape, and others because they lead to new relationships that endure beyond a couple of weeks of shared experiences.

When Lesley Robinson and her partner Glyn travelled to Zimbabwe back in 1998, they had no way of knowing that they were embarking on a journey through a new land which would lead to a bigger adventure – a change of direction for Lesley's career and a close bond with a community whose lives were very different to their own back in Holmfirth, West Yorkshire.

Back then, Lesley was marketing director for a big American pharmaceutical company whose products were known worldwide. Today, she runs a small business selling natural alternative therapy products whose ingredients grow in Zimbabwe, and have been used for centuries by native healers or witchdoctors. More...

Oh boy! Tiger Woods latest credit crunch victim!!!

The credit crunch and accompanying global recession claimed its most famous sporting victim last night when General Motors, the troubled American carmaker, announced that it was ending its sponsorship deal with the world's most recognisable athlete, Tiger Woods.

The deal between GM and Woods, said to be worth more than $10m (£6.6m) a year to the golfer, had endured for almost a decade and become one of the most visible sponsorship arrangements in sport, not least because Woods' golf bag had been transformed into an advertisement for Buick, one of the carmaker's brands.

As part of the deal, the world No1 also took part in television commercials for the budget-priced range of cars - a source of mirth in some circles because Woods is reported to drive a Porsche. Ironically, during the nine years he has been promoting Buick its sale have reportedly fallen by 58% - more than any other GM brand. More...

Domestic abuse in China...

Li Li is a waitress in a Beijing restaurant. She ran away from home a decade ago to escape the beatings from her mother. Now in her late 20's, she is considering running away again - this time to escape her violent husband.

"I am so depressed with marriage and family life," says Li, who got married three years ago. "I wonder why violence and loneliness has shadowed me all my life." Li has already sought the help of Maple Women's Psychological Counseling Center, a non-profit women's organization in Beijing, by calling its hotline.

The Maple center has been receiving about 1,000 complaints against domestic violence a year since launching its hotline in 2004. There are dozens of such hotline services in the country through which women can report domestic abuse. Though traditionally regarded as a private family affair for years, wife-beating is now socially and legally unacceptable. More...

Britain goes ahead with identity card plans for foreigners...

The British government began its identity card program for foreign nationals Tuesday—six years after heated debate over whether the costly plan is an effective tool against terrorism, identity theft and welfare fraud.

The last time Britain had ID cards was at the end of World War II.

The program will start with roughly 50,000 foreign students and spouses of permanent residents who will receive cards if they qualify for visa extensions.

Other foreign nationals living and working in Britain will not be immediately affected, but they will eventually need cards as the program is expanded. Officials have not provided details about the national plan, although airport workers are expected to need cards next year out of security concerns. More...

A man who fathered nine children by raping his two daughters over many years has been jailed for life with a minimum term of 19-and-a half years.

The 56-year-old from Sheffield was sentenced to a life term for each of the 25 rapes he had admitted.

The attacks led to 19 pregnancies, Sheffield Crown Court heard.

The daughters said in a statement: "His detention in prison brings us only the knowledge that he cannot physically touch us again."

Judge Alan Goldsack QC said the case was the worst he had come across in nearly 40 years of dealing with criminal cases.

Nine of the children were born, two of whom died on the day of their birth. The other 10 pregnancies were miscarried or aborted. More...

“Today is a great day for us, a day that we begin to exercise our rights as a sovereign people with strength and pride,” comments Canupa Gluha Mani, Tetuwan Council Judicial Member of the Cante Tenza “Strong Heart” Warrior Society. Mani’s 2500 member warrior society has contracted to provide private security services for the Free Lakota Bank.

“We invite people of any creed, faith or heritage to unite in an effort to reclaim control of wealth. It is our hope that other tribal nations and American citizens recognize the importance of silver and gold as currency and decide to mirror our system of honest trade.” Mani, also known as Duane Martin Sr, is a member of the delegation that declared Lakota independence on December 17th, 2007.

Suite...

Americans dumping credit cards, returning to good, old cash...

Cash or credit? For more Americans, who have already maxed out their credit cards or are just trying to manage their spending better in the tough economy, the answer is increasingly the old-fashioned one.

Retailers like Wal-Mart Stores Inc., Target Corp. and J.C. Penney Co. are noticing a marked shift away from credit cards in favor of cash and debit cards. A big factor is less credit available as major card issuers cut spending limits and raise fees even for customers who pay their bills on time.

The shift ends Americans' long love affair with credit cards and is one of the changes in consumer behavior that has emerged since the financial meltdown that could depress consumer spending this holiday season and affect shoppers' habits long afterward. More...

Article complet...

Obama team mulling over job offer for Monica Lewinsky!!! Isn't politics fun and sexy?

President-Elect Barack Obama's transition team is reported to be deeply divided over whether to offer a post to Monica Lewinsky, the former White House Intern whose intimate relationship with President Bill Clinton led to his impeachment.

Until now, Lewinsky was one of the few high-profile figures from the Clinton Presidency who had not been recruited for the incoming Obama team. Mr. Clinton's brother Roger is another, though on Friday there were rumors he would be named ambassador to Spain.

...

The Clintons themselves have not commented on the possibility of a Lewinsky appointment though people close to her have said that Sen. Clinton was shocked and appalled by the idea. "It's a non-starter for her," said Philippe Raines, a longtime aide to Sen. Clinton. "She doesn't want to run into Monica in the West Wing ladies' room," he added.  More...

The Scientology security guards and the Samurai swordsman...

A security guard shot and killed a man wielding two samurai swords at the entrance to a Scientology centre in Los Angeles frequented by high-profile adherents such as Tom Cruise and John Travolta, the Los Angeles Times reported Monday, dpa reported.

Police detained the guard for questioning but said that a surveillance tape at the facility backed his claim that he fired his semi-automatic handgun to protect himself and two colleagues.

"The evidence is very clear - the security officers were defending their safety," said Terry S Hara, deputy chief of the Los Angeles Police Department. He said the would-be assailant was close enough to the guards to injure them had he not been shot.

Witnesses said that the unidentified man killed in the shooting arrived at the Scientology centre's parking lot in a red convertible and approached the guards waving the 1.5-metre swords when the shots were fired.

Police said he had been involved with the church in the past but did not give details of the relationship.

Social services 'set up CCTV camera in couple's bedroom!!!' WTF!

Council staff are said to have spied on the young parents at night as part of a plan to see if they were fit to look after their baby, who was sleeping in another room.

The mother and father were forced to cite the Human Rights Act, which protects the right to a private life, before the social services team backed down and agreed to switch off the surveillance camera while they were in bed together.

The case is highlighted in a new dossier of human rights abuses carried out against vulnerable and elderly adults in nursing homes and hospitals across Britain.

Officials from Renji Hospital, where the sperm bank is located, said yesterday they had received several inquiries about their practices after the hoax photos appeared online. They said the hospital's sperm-collecting procedure is in line with professional regulations and that the misleading pictures could tarnish the reputation of the hospital and the sperm bank. More...

Is too much aid the cause of Africa's poverty and corruption?

Where I come from in West Africa, we have a saying: "A fool at 40 is a fool forever", and most African countries have now been independent for over 40 years.

Most are blessed with all the elements to help compete on a global stage - abundant natural resources, a young population and the climate and conditions to be a major agricultural force.

And yet today, my continent, which is home to 10% of the world's population, represents just 1% of global trade. I have no doubt we have to take responsibility for our failures. We can't afford to keep playing the blame game.

But when 50 years of foreign aid has failed to lift Africa out of poverty, could corruption be the reason?

Could that really be all there is to it?  More + video...

Guantanamo inmates to get art, English classes!!! Perhaps they would prefer getting their freedom?

U.S. military officials at the Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, prison camp are programming entertainment and educational activities for the detainees, an adviser says.

Although U.S. President-elect Barack Obama has promised to empty the notorious camp of its 250 detainees accused of being "enemy combatants" with terrorism links, military officials are nevertheless planning for the long haul and will soon offer prisoners such activities as art and geology classes, The Miami Herald reported Sunday.

"We want to keep their brains stimulated. We're not here to give degrees," an Arab-American cultural adviser identified only as Zak told the newspaper. "Once they are engaged and busy, they leave the guards alone."  More...

Colorado couple throw open farm for free vegetable pickings; 40,000 people turn up!!!

A farm couple got a huge surprise when they opened their fields to anyone who wanted to pick up free vegetables left over after the harvest — 40,000 people showed up.

Joe and Chris Miller's fields were picked so clean Saturday that a second day of gleaning — the ancient practice of picking up leftover food in farm fields — was canceled Sunday.

"Overwhelmed is putting it mildly," Chris Miller said. "People obviously need food."

She said she expected 5,000 to 10,000 people would show up Saturday to collect free potatoes, carrots and leeks. Instead, an estimated 11,000 vehicles snaked around cornfields and backed up more than two miles. About 30 acres of the 600-acre farm 37 miles north of Denver became a parking lot. More...

Apparently, Berlusconi has something about Obama's "tan..."

Far from backing down from his description earlier this month of America's first black president as "young, handsome and also sun-tanned", he reiterated the bizarre remark, again insisting that although it sparked international anger and ridicule, it was intended as a compliment.

Mr Berlusconi, 72, who is famous for his year-round caramel complexion, said on Sunday: "We would all like to be tanned like Naomi Campbell and Obama."

...

Mr Berlusconi made his initial "suntan" remark in Moscow during a press conference in which he said he hoped that Mr Obama's relative youth would herald a new era of cooperation with his Russian counterpart, President Dmitry Medvedev.

He was castigated at home and abroad, with critics saying the comment was at best in poor taste and at worst racist. Full story...

You go to Lourdes hoping for a miracle and come back with a ... disease???

MILLIONS of pilgrims flock to Lourdes each year seeking healing from waters that flow from the grotto where they believe visions of the Virgin Mary appeared. But this year the French town is being blamed for making visitors sick.

An outbreak of norovirus infection — known as the winter vomiting bug — has hit tourists from several countries, including Ireland. Between mid-September and mid-October, nine clusters of the infection involving about 90 primary and more than 100 secondary cases were identified in the Netherlands, Ireland, Italy and France, all linked to Lourdes pilgrimages.

Norovirus causes acute gastroenteritis. The impact of the disease is more serious among the elderly and infirm, who make up a large proportion of those who travel to Lourdes. More...

Yemen: poor country with poor people, but big, expensive mosque for the president...

The inauguration of an enormous new mosque named after Yemen's authoritarian president has bewildered the people of this impoverished Arab country — especially when they learned it cost a staggering $60 million.

It's a massive sum in a country that ranks as the poorest in the Arab world and is beset by internal armed conflict, terrorism and severe malnutrition.

"We need schools and hospitals," said Salem Ahmed, a government employee. "Many Yemenis have to travel abroad for medical treatment. This is hypocrisy."

Nonetheless, senior Islamic clerics dutifully turned out for Saturday's opening ceremony of the Saleh Mosque to play their part in glorifying the country's leader, President Ali Abdullah Saleh. More...

The rich go on a land-grabbing spree in poor countries...

Rich governments and corporations are triggering alarm for the poor as they buy up the rights to millions of hectares of agricultural land in developing countries in an effort to secure their own long-term food supplies.

The head of the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation, Jacques Diouf, has warned that the controversial rise in land deals could create a form of "neo-colonialism", with poor states producing food for the rich at the expense of their own hungry people.

Rising food prices have already set off a second "scramble for Africa". This week, the South Korean firm Daewoo Logistics announced plans to buy a 99-year lease on a million hectares in Madagascar. Its aim is to grow 5m tonnes of corn a year by 2023, and produce palm oil from a further lease of 120,000 hectares (296,000 acres), relying on a largely South African workforce. Production would be mainly earmarked for South Korea, which wants to lessen dependence on imports. More...

Lequel est le meilleur anti-virus gratuit? Avast, Antivir ou AVG ? On a voté !!!

Suite...

Is England becoming a Super Police State?

When the FSF started this blog the intention was to write about issues that effect most supporters: ticket prices, concerns at club management, kick off times and so forth. We didn't want to be writing every other week about the civil liberties issues many fans are increasingly facing, nor do we want to be seen as being constantly critical of the police.

As mentioned in a previous article, we work closely with the boys in blue at the most senior level and are appreciative of their genuine desire to listen to our concerns. However, after hearing about the experiences of some 80 Stoke supporters at the hands of Greater Manchester Police (GMP) on Saturday we feel their ordeal needs to be brought to a wider audience if only to flag up the power that police have, and just how willing GMP are to use it.

Admittedly, a relatively rare occurrence, but this could happen to you...  More...

Singapore: moron jailed for 32 years for raping his 5 under-age daughters...

A Singaporean Muslim man with 10 wives and 64 children was sentenced to 32 years in jail and a caning for raping five of his under-age daughters, court documents showed.

The 45-year-old man, who cannot be named in order to protect the identity of his daughters, was sentenced on Tuesday after he pleaded guilty to five charges of rape and admitted to another 34 charges, including rape and attempted aggravated rape.

"The numerous rapes in this case were systematic and sickening," said High Court Judge Tay Yong Kwang in the judgment.

"The mothers of the young girls had somehow been persuaded by the accused that what he was doing was right. That deprived the daughters of one escape route that they could have taken -- that of approaching some adults whom they trusted to confide in them their predicament."

The court sentenced him to 24 strokes of the cane. More...

George Harrison "hidden" interview comes to light...

Details of a revealing interview with Beatles guitarist George Harrison have come to light after 40 years.

The reel-to-reel tapes have been stored by former journalist Miranda Ward since she talked to Harrison in 1967.

Film director David Lambert, who has heard the recordings, said: "It was really the meaning of life according to George Harrison in 1967."

Gebregeorgis Yohannes, the Ethiopian who is bringing books to Ethiopian kids! Wonderful!

CNN has chosen Gebregeorgis Yohannes as one of its heroes (picked as one of 10 out of 10,000 nominations) and it was an excellent choice. Yohannes has devoted himself for much of the past decade to getting books into the hands of Ethiopian children.

His goals are ambitious. Not only does he want to bring books to a country where they are are scarce (in Ethiopia 99 percent of schools have no library and more than 57 percent of people over 15 years old are illiterate) but he wants to change the world.

“This is really my way of changing society, starting with children, who connect to other cultures, to other ways of thinking,” Yohannes said in an interview with The Associated Press this week. “Books have changed me, have changed my world view.” More...

Vatican newspaper praises the Beatles, forgives John Lennon!!!

The Vatican's newspaper, Osservatore Romano, has come out lauding the Beatles while forgiving a remark by John Lennon declaring the Fab Four more famous than Jesus Christ.

The article, published this weekend, commemorates the 40th anniversary of the Beatles' White Album. It also references a major controversy that blew up in the Beatles' faces.

Back in 1966, the Evening Standard in England published an interview with Lennon in which he was quoted as saying:

"Christianity will go. It will vanish and shrink. I needn't argue about that. I'm right and I will be proved right. We're more popular than Jesus now. I don't know which will go first — rock 'n' roll or Christianity." More...

Argentina: ex-police chief kills himself "live" on TV...

A former police chief in Argentina, wanted for alleged crimes against human rights, has shot himself dead in front of television cameras.

Mario Ferreyra was giving an interview on top of a water tank at his home in the northern province of Tucuman.

Police were coming to arrest him when he killed himself.

Mr Ferreyra was wearing his customary black shirt and cowboy hat and told the interviewer that he was innocent and had not committed any crimes.

He then told his wife, Maria, that he would love her forever, pulled a pistol from his boot and shot himself behind the ear. More...

Why is a Japanese dude living at Mexico City's airport?

Hiroshi Nohara is on a layover at the Mexico City airport. It has lasted almost three months, and he has no plans to leave.

For reasons he can’t explain, the Japanese man has been in Terminal 1 of the Benito Juarez International Airport since Sept 2, surviving off donations from fast-food restaurants and passengers and sleeping in a chair.

At first, he frightened passengers, and airport authorities asked the Japanese Embassy to investigate why the foul-smelling man refused to leave. Now, he’s somewhat of a celebrity, capturing Mexico’s collective imagination with nearly daily television news reports on his life at the food court. More...

Will George W. Bush quit the White House as the most despised American President ever?

PROTESTERS have demanded that US President George W Bush get out of Peru where he is attending an Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit, blaming him for the world economic crisis.

"Bush out," about 1000 demonstrators chanted in the center of the capital Lima, watched by scores of police in riot gear who made sure they did not move towards the APEC summit venue several kilometers away.

"This crisis didn't come from the Peruvian people. We shouldn't have to pay for it," a union leader told the crowd, which demonstrated peacefully. More...

Is this an attack against the Pope or a camouflaged eugenics campaign?

What the heck, let´s open up a can of worms! Let the cat out of the bag! Let´s jump on the pile! Let´s cause the Pope an Excedrin headache the size of a pumpkin throbbing around his temples. Let´s invite him to address hyper-population in our world and its accelerating ramifications.

He addresses environmental destruction on the worldwide scale, but he promotes unlimited births while decrying abortion. He stands against birth control, which results in millions of children that cannot be fed, water, housed or given any chance of a reasonable existence. In other words, the Pope promulgates starvation, disease, misery and human suffering on a global scale.

Yet, enlightened Catholics in the United States and worldwide practice birth control and abortion. Catholics in the U.S. practice birth control better than the Protestants. Catholic women birth 1.9 babies on average. More...

Suite...

Nepal's "Buddha boy" disappears yet again!!!

A teenage Nepali boy many believe is an incarnation of Lord Buddha went missing after blessing thousands of supporters, police said on Saturday.

Ram Bahadur Bamjon, 17, blessed devotees for nearly 10 days in the remote forest of Ratanpuri, 150 km southeast of Kathmandu before disappearing on Friday, junior police officer Santosh Budhathoki said.

Bamjon came into the limelight in 2005 when tens of thousands of people turned up to see him sitting cross-legged under a tree in a dense forest for nearly ten months. The Buddha is often shown in sketches sitting under a tree in a similar posture.

Ten days ago Bamjon reappeared after almost a year when he had disappeared in order to meditate in the jungle. This is the third time Bamjon has disappeared since his first appearance three years ago. More...

Has the RIAA met its match?

There was fear and trembling on the Internets earlier this month when the word went out that storied Harvard Law School professor Charles Nesson - "Billion Dollar Charlie" - had decided to go mano a mano with the most-hated institution in America. The Bush White House? No, the Recording Industry Association of America.

...

Background: In the past few years, the RIAA has sent out about 30,000 letters to individuals and families, demanding payment for illegal downloads. You really don't want one of these letters in your mailbox, because (1) the RIAA is probably right - someone in your house has been downloading, and (2) it's an offer you can't refuse. Generally, the RIAA wants between $3,000 and $5,000 to go away, along with your assurance that the illegal downloading will stop. "Parents get these letters, and they are thinking, 'Omigod, how can I cover my [expletive],' " says Boston University graduate student Joel Tenenbaum. Full story...

Suite...

Malaysia: yoga banned for Muslims!!!

Malaysia's top Islamic body on Saturday banned Muslims from practicing yoga, saying the Indian physical exercise contains elements of Hinduism and could corrupt Muslims.

The National Fatwa Council, which has the authority to rule on how Muslims must conduct their faith, issued a fatwa, or edict, saying yoga involves not just physical exercise but also includes Hindu spiritual elements, chanting and worship.

Recently, the council issued an edict banning tomboys, ruling that girls who act like boys violate the tenets of Islam.
